A practical selection framework

SQE books: how to choose SQE1 revision books for January 2027

SQE1 books do three different jobs. Some teach the law, some give you single questions to practise, and some let you sit a complete paper against the clock. This guide explains how to choose SQE revision books, what the January 2027 format changes, why a book's law date matters, and what the main SQE1 books contain and cost.

01

Learn substantive law

Choose current, specification-mapped explanatory material when you need to build or refresh the underlying law.

02

Practise individual SBAs

Use question-led material to apply rules to facts, identify the best answer and examine why distractors fail.

03

Rehearse complete papers

Use full-paper material for timing, stamina, sequencing and a realistic two-session routine.

The mix depends on your starting point. If you are new to a subject, start with a revision guide and add questions once you can follow the rules. If you already know the law, spend most of your time on questions and go back to the guide for topics you keep getting wrong. In the final weeks, full papers matter more, because they train timing, stamina and switching between subjects across a whole session.

What changes for January 2027

From the January 2027 sitting, each SQE1 paper (FLK1 and FLK2) has 170 questions instead of 180, set as two sessions of 85 instead of 90. Each session is still 2 hours 33 minutes. Subjects are now grouped by session, so each session tests a fixed set of subjects, and ethics and professional conduct can be tested in any session. The changes apply to everyone sitting in January 2027, including resitters (SRA, 10 September 2026).

For books, this matters in two ways:

  • Question books organised by subject are largely unaffected. A question on contract formation is still a question on contract formation.
  • Mock papers are affected. An old-format mock has 90 questions per session, about 102 seconds a question; the January 2027 format gives 85 questions in the same time, about 108 seconds each. Old-format mocks also mix subjects differently from the new session groupings. They are still useful practice, but no longer rehearse the real paper exactly.

Why the law date matters

Every SQE1 sitting has a date at which the law is examined. For January 2027 it is 11 September 2026. For July 2027 it is 12 March 2027 (SRA booking windows, checked 30 September 2026).

Look for the “law stated as at” date in any book before you buy it. A book written to an earlier date can still be useful for practice, but you will need to check whether anything relevant has changed between that date and your sitting's cut-off. A book written to your sitting's date saves you that step.

Checks before buying

  • Specification and law date: check which sitting the edition addresses and whether updates are provided.
  • Purpose: distinguish explanatory textbooks, question banks and full mock papers (such as our FLK1 and FLK2 mock exam books).
  • Samples: where available, inspect whether answers merely identify an option or explain the reasoning.
  • Format: decide whether print, ebook, audio or an online timed environment supports the way you study.
  • Paper format: for full mocks, check whether the book uses the January 2027 format (170 questions, two sessions of 85) or the earlier 180-question format.

Books, question banks or online mocks?

Books are one option. Online question banks and mock platforms offer timed modes and larger question pools, and prices range widely. Our SQE1 question bank comparison tests eight providers' free questions against the SRA's own, and our SQE1 question bank and mock prices page sets out what each costs, checked on 30 September 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Which SQE books do I need for SQE1?

That depends on what you already know. Most candidates use a mix of a revision guide for subjects they need to learn, a question book or bank for practice, and full mock papers nearer the exam. Start with the part of your preparation that is weakest.

Can I still use a 180-question mock book for January 2027?

Yes, for practice. It will not match the new timing (about 108 seconds a question) or the session groupings, so allow for that when you read your score.

Are Solon Prep books official SRA material?

No. They are independent revision aids, not created or endorsed by the SRA.
